Day 1 – New S500 Update Seminar & Tradeshow
“Understanding and using the S500 standards and guidelines for Australians”
New standards that will affect the water damage restoration industry have arrived with the release of the updated "ANSI/IICRC S500 - Water Damage Restoration - Fourth Edition: 2015." RIA wants you to be prepared!
Course Overview
Each seminar will go through changes that will affect the way materials are now recommended to be dried, calculations for dehumidification, air movement, application of heat, and science that includes vapour pressure of materials.
Learning Objectives:
Those attending this presentation will have a good understanding of the critical changes, why they were needed, impact on the industry and their businesses.
It is recommended that those attending should have their own digital subscription or printed copy of the 4th edition of IICRC S500 that allows them to highlight and take notes.
Time: 8am – 5pm (Lunch included & Tradeshow from 12 to 2pm & 5 to 7pm)
Day 2 & 3 – RIA Project and Risk Management
Time: 8:00am – 4.30pm
Course Overview:
This two-day course is a prerequisite for those pursuing their advanced certifications, either for the Certified Restorer (CR) or Water Loss Specialist (WLS), it is also open to those who want to obtain continuing education credit and advance their professional knowledge. Instructed by one of the industries most decorated trainers, attendees will be able to develop an understanding of the fundamental principles of project management and how to apply them to restoration projects to profitably produce quality products and services within industry accepted parameters and project constraints.
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course each student is expected to know:
- The three constraints associated with managing a project
- The four phases of the project life cycle and activities associated with each
- The tools and documentation used to manage a project
- The tools and documentation used to identify and manage risk
- How project management can improve a company’s restoration business
Meet the Instructor: 
Mickey Lee Lee helped develop and now serves as the committee chair for the IICRC’s Commercial Drying Specialist certification as well as serves as chairman of the S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration. He served on the advisory committee of RIA’s Water Loss Institute from 2002-2006. In 2003 he served on the task force for the development of the Body of Knowledge for the Water Loss Specialist (WLS) certification program.
Lee has over 30 years of experience in operations, management, training, consulting and writing services in the fields of property damage restoration, psychrometrics, drying science, mould remediation and structural drying.
He is a well-known writer, speaker and instructor throughout the restoration industry. Mickey earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Texas A&M.

Understanding the ANSI/IICRC S500 Standard for Professional Water Damage Restoration
This workshop will focus on the key elements of the latest revision of the ANSI/IICRC’s S500 Standard. The S500 is the generally accepted Standard of Care within the water damage industry and will help restorers, insurers, contractors, third-party administrators and building inspectors to understand how to properly handle water intrusions of different categories and classes.
In this workshop we will focus on applying these procedures to best serve the needs of the project which can lead to better outcomes for all stakeholders on a water loss.
Throughout the day, we will answer questions like:
- How do I handle water intrusions with varying degrees of contamination (i.e. Category 1, 2, 3 and regulated contaminants)?
- How do I determine the initial amount of dehumidification equipment in residential and commercial buildings?
- What are the key changes between the 3rd Edition and the 4th Edition that most impacts job processes and decisions?
- When do I perform controlled demolition to speed-up the restoration process?
- When should I use anti-microbial biocides on a water damage project?
- How many airmovers and air-filtration devices should be used on a project?
- What are the key legal and risk management issues a restorer needs to consider?
- How can I convince a Third-party Administrator that I placed the right amount of equipment on a job?
- What comes first; drying materials or controlled demolition?
- What is next for the S500 standards?
- What is the difference between the “Standard” and the “Reference Guide”? Is all of it the accepted “standard of care”?
- How can I get copies of the ANSI/IICRC S500 document?
Additionally, we will use a couple of real-live scenarios to illustrate portions of the S500 and give participants and opportunity to put it into practice.
